Time and time again we've found that there are more people playing video games during self-quarantine than before the global pandemic broke out across the world. With more gamers come more streamers, more viewers, more eSports, more game sales, and more purchases of accessories. After looking into the Amazon ($AMZN) data sets, companies who make mice, keyboards, hard drives, headsets, controllers, pads, memory cards, webcams, and gaming chairs are selling more products.
We looked into the biggest gaming peripheral makers, and across the board saw the ranks improve under the 'Computer and Accessories' category. Note that this is for the US only, although across the globe these manufacturers are also among the best-sellers. But since different territories have their own categories, and some products aren't available everywhere, we'll just focus on domestic peripherals for now.
Category Ranks for 'Computer and Accessories'
In early March, Americans weren't quarantining like they are now, and as you can see, Logitech products moved from the #99 best-ranked to #43 in both April and May. Logitech is best known for cameras (web and security), keyboards and mice, and even phone accessories.
The same thing happened to headset and soundcard maker Turtle Beach, where they were on the verge of falling out of the top 100, and in both April and May dipped into the top 25 of 'Computer and Accessories'.
RUNMUS headsets always averaged well but cracked the top 20 in ranks over the last few weeks.
Gaming peripheral maker SteelSeries saw a tremendous breakthrough over the last six months, selling like hotcakes in April.
There was a run on video game manufacturer PDP's products in April that saw the company hit #19...
...and for Razer, another gaming accessory company, the increase in sales happened in late March. They're best known for computer hardware and eSports products.
Employee Counts and Stock Prices
While Logitech ($LOGI) and Turtle Beach ($HEAR) have only grown their headcounts 4% and 8%, respectively, it's nothing to sneeze at, considering how many companies are shrinking, furloughing, and laying off employees in droves.
Interest in Turtle Beach soundcards and headsets has seen a rise in 2020, gaining 21.79% more Twitter followers over the past two years alone. We'll keep monitoring the Amazon ranks over the summer to see if people keep buying new mice, keyboards, and...well, monitors.
About the Data:
Thinknum tracks companies using the information they post online - jobs, social and web traffic, product sales, and app ratings - and creates data sets that measure factors like hiring, revenue, and foot traffic. Data sets may not be fully comprehensive (they only account for what is available on the web), but they can be used to gauge performance factors like staffing and sales.
