If you've spent any amount of time on social media today, you'd know that it's International Cat Day. On Twitter, the #internationalCatDay hashtag is trending, and it's full of lovely messages about felines, complete with tweets from celebs and cat lovers alike.
But we have data here at Thinknum Media. Lots of data. And some of us have cats. And cats love cat food. Lots of cat food. And kitty litter. And millions of people order their cat supplies online. So with that, what is it that we're buying for our cats the most, at least at Amazon and Walmart, two of the largest retailers in the world?
We took a look at the all-time best sellers at both of the massive retailers by digging into the "Pets" category at Walmart and the "Pet Supplies" category at Amazon. We then grouped by product name and then averaged out each product's average category rank since we've been tracking the data (about 2.5 years). It turns out that cat owners are doing a lot of shopping for cat littler online. It makes sense, being that cat litter is heavy, and having it delivered to your door for free turns out to be a pretty good deal.
Amazon's top-20 cat-related items
At Amazon, the top-20 cat products are led by cat littler. The Precious Cat Ultra Premium Clumping Litter in a massive 40-poung bag, to be precise. For just around $17, it seems thousands of Amazon shoppers are having the stuff delivered to their doors by the tons. Subscribers can find the complete dataset here.
Other top-sellers are Amazon include Fancy Feast Wet Cat Food, grooming gloves, flea collars, a catnip toy, and even a heated bed.

Walmart's top-20 cat-related items
At Walmart (full list and dataset here for subscribers), the best-selling cat food is Friskies Prime Filets Variety Pack. At just around $11 for a 24-pack, it's no wonder that this one is flying off the real and virtual shelves at Walmart.
As for the rest of Walmart's top-20-selling cat supply items, a vast majority are litter-box related, including litter of all shapes and sizes and varieties. Another iteration of Friskies Wet Cat Food appears in the form of a 12 pack.
