The Amazon best-sellers list we have here is based on sales-rank data reported by Amazon every day throughout the month of August 2019. It includes the top-100 selling items in each Amazon category. In this case, we looked just at the Amazon "Video Games" category, averaged each product's sales rank for the month, and then weighted based on the number of days each product remained a best-seller in the month. The above list represents only items that ranked every day in the month of August in order to correct for items that may have spiked in sales rank due to a flash sale.
In other words, this list represents consistent best-sellers for the month of August at Amazon in the Video Games category.
The numbers reflect the Nintendo Switch's recent surge in platform sales. July numbers from NPD Group, a market research company that ranks videogame sales, showed that the top-10 sellers in July were also dominated by Nintendo. Nintendo recently announced a smaller, more portable version of the Switch called Switch Lite which is likely to build upon Nintendo's already solid user base.
Of the top-10 selling games in August, six were Nintendo Switch titles, 2 were Sony PlayStation 4 titles, 1 was for the Microsoft Xbox One, and 1 was a PC title.

That said, the Sony and Microsoft platforms have a four-year head start on Nintendo's. Both Sony and Microsoft are expected to announce new consoles in the coming year.
About the Data:
Thinknum tracks companies using information they post online - jobs, social and web traffic, product sales and app ratings - and creates data sets that measure factors like hiring, revenue and foot traffic. Data sets may not be fully comprehensive (they only account for what is available on the web), but they can be used to gauge performance factors like staffing and sales.
