Apple ($AAPL) tends to hire people anywhere but New York CIty. But with the company's new forays into editorial content for its newly monetized Apple News Plus service, it appears that the company may be slowly, quietly, building a team of specialists in the Big Apple. That's because since the new year, Apple jobs in New York City have trebled, from a measly 4 to a somewhat interesting 12 openings.

Before New Yorkers get too excited about this development, however, it's best to contextualize. Of the 254 cities worldwide in which Apple is hiring, New York is tied for 24th along with cities in China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Mexico, and the United Arab Emirates, among others. By far, Apple is hiring the most at its Santa Clara Valley headquarters, Austin, and Shanghai.

But when removing retail jobs — for which Apple is almost always hiring on a daily basis — New York's place in Apple's corporate hiring strategy begins to bloom. Just a bit.

That all said, and as miniscule as Apple's hiring efforts in New York appear, the trend is real: jobs in New York City are rising a bit for Apple, and given the titles of the jobs the company is looking for, it indeed appears as if a small team of media professionals is being built in a location where media talent tends to be plentiful.
