The Business of Business is expanding! We're looking for a few writers and a growth/audience development editor to join our growing team. Each job description and information on how to apply is posted below. We look forward to your applications!

Writer

The Business of Business, the media arm of Thinknum, is hiring a writer to join its growing team. Here’s what we’re looking for:

A demonstrated passion for the world of business

Did you study finance in college? Run a lemonade stand as a kid? Get a part time job without your parents telling you to? Read every startup biography and Paul Graham post you can find? We want to know what excites you about this topic and this world.

The ability to write clearly and concisely

The Business of Business bases many of its stories on alternative data from Thinknum. We provide data-supported context around stories about the people, companies, industries, and economies shaping our world. We want to know that you’re able to work with data, conduct interviews, and synthesize information into compelling stories that our readers will love.

A sense of vision and possibility

We want to work with someone who has an active imagination when it comes to thinking up story ideas, headlines, and approaches to executing. We want you to be unafraid to pick up the phone or send an email to anyone that you need to talk to do your best work -- and to cajole them into answering your questions. You should be a self-starter, brimming with pitches and proactively seeking direction and guidance when you’re unsure what to do.

An all-hands mentality

We’re a startup organization. That means roles and responsibilities shift in ways large and small. Our goal is to grow, and we need people who are willing to jump on tasks that they see as opportunities for us without being asked. But…

Be comfortable being accountable and responsible

We also need you to check-in, tell us what you’re doing, accept feedback, both praise and critical, and be OK with working on an editorial team. This isn’t a job for a lone wolf, or someone who wants to disappear for weeks to write a huge investigative feature. There will be clear metrics for daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly goals. You should be comfortable working against them and objectively evaluating yourself against them for yourself, and with your supervisor.

Be interesting and interested

We’re casting a wide net -- we want people with diverse backgrounds and experiences because business is a global story, and we believe unique experiences and perspectives are actively good things. You don’t have to have professional journalism experience to apply. You do have to tell us why hiring you will be a competitive advantage for us and a great opportunity for you.

To apply, send a cover letter and your resume to paul.smalera@businessofbusiness.com. We can’t respond to everyone, but if we think there’s a fit, we’ll be in touch.

Growth Editor

The Business of Business is hiring a Growth Editor to help expand our reach and audience. This position will be responsible for running our social media accounts, sending a daily newsletter, and writing articles that capture interesting social media threads for our audience.

A sense of how to interact with readers online

Our stories are deep, nerdy dives on things that directly impact our daily lives. We want someone who can take our articles and find ways to hook readers into the journalism we’re producing. You will be an active voice and participant in the daily conversation we have online.

A sense of vision and possibility

We want to work with someone who has an active imagination when it comes to thinking up strategies for growth across our channels. You should be a self-starter, brimming with ideas and proactively seeking direction and guidance when you’re unsure what to do.

Be comfortable with analytics and generating insights

We need you to keep track of your efforts and also help us understand how our stories are performing and what we can do better. This means studying our readership data, generating reports, and helping the team think about how to tell stories in a way that is valuable to our audience. In other words, you need to be a player and a coach.

About the Data:

Thinknum tracks companies using the information they post online, jobs, social and web traffic, product sales, and app ratings, and creates data sets that measure factors like hiring, revenue, and foot traffic. Data sets may not be fully comprehensive (they only account for what is available on the web), but they can be used to gauge performance factors like staffing and sales.
