Amazon ($AMZN) is settling into Virginia after delivering its promise on having its HQ2 there, but it is still shipping hundreds of jobs to New York long after activists and politicians caused the company to cancel its delivery. And while this was a trend seen long before HQ2 rumors started to swell, the increase in warehouse job openings over time reflects recent moves made by the company.

As we saw earlier this week, Amazon is ramping up hiring across the board. The largest company in the world continues to get bigger, crossing the 30,000 individual job posting mark in April.

The company isn't just hiring more people in its HQ states, however. According to the job listings data, the number of Amazon job listings in New York state saw a similar positive trend since the new year, even months after it reneged its plans to move into Long Island City.

Amazon has hired engineers in New York state since 2015, as seen in our database, and it hasn't skipped a beat. It still needs plenty of people to work in the Big Apple, especially when it comes to Amazon Web Services, a platform used by companies from Wall Street to Midtown and Upstate to Long Island.

What's more notable than "business as usual" is Amazon's radical increase in job openings for two categories: Fulfillment & Operations Management and Fulfillment / Warehouse Associate. In other words, the positions that are responsible for giving you that Dash order of Huggies diapers or a Prime delivery of a 756 roll pallet of duct tape.

From the beginning of 2019 through April 30, Amazon saw a net increase of 20 job openings for these two categories in New York.

Why is this the case? For one, Amazon decided to move itself into Woodside, a few more stops down on the 7 line away from Long Island City. According to local newspaper THE CITY, a independent, nonprofit news outlet, Terreno Realty Corporation got the green light from the NYC Department of Buildings to do a $5.6 million construction job at a warehouse — the former Bulova facility in Woodside — where Amazon signed a 10-year lease. This lease was for its second fulfillment center in New York City, the first of which was in Staten Island.

Staten Island and Woodside are the top locations for Amazon through these two categories.

(Bear in mind that job openings can be for more than one position at the company. I.e. a Warehouse/Shopper Team Member listing could accept multiple applicants at once.)

As reporter Christine Chung wrote, "borough elected officials who opposed the plan said they’d pivot their protests to the Woodside facility." With city government approval for construction and job openings ramping up in the area, however, that pivot might be too little, too late, for those hoping to not have Amazon in their backyard.

For those who are willing to embrace the e-commerce site, the fulfillment centers will help Amazon process more packages in the tri-state area, especially out on Long Island and Queens. Amazon has another warehouse out in Bethpage, but adding another massive fulfillment center in Woodside will allow for increased bandwidth.

So yes, New York state and especially residents of all five boros: Amazon is still out for delivery in New York City. And, in fact, it has already arrived on our doorsteps - albeit in a smaller-than-expected package of jobs. We just didn't have the data to see this... Until now.
