Hours after "Parasite" took the Oscar for Best Picture, social media was blazing with appreciation for the Korean film, with hashtags #ParasiteBestPicture trending on Twitter and Google searches for "Parasite" far outpacing all other nominated movies.

But the metric that studios and producers around the world will be watching is how the movie sells in home and streaming markets now that it's been crowned the best movie of 2019.

And, so far, it looks like they'll be pleased with the results, according to Amazon ($AMZN) sales-rank data.

Beginning in January, when Parasite first became available on DVD and Blu-Ray, the movie began a steady rise up Amazon's top-100 charts in its TV & Movies category. By January 27, it hit — and held — the number one spot, never leaving the top-5.

Leading into last night's Academy Awards, Amazon's top-10 movie sellers looked a lot like a list of top nominees, with a couple of surprising exceptions.

Oscar nominations in the Amazon top-10 included Joker, Parasite, and Harriet. Other movies and shows on the list were perennial favorites like Game of Thrones. The list will likely more closely reflect the Oscar winners as the movies become available and as consumers catch up on 2019's best.

About the Data:

Thinknum tracks companies using the information they post online - jobs, social and web traffic, product sales and app ratings - and creates data sets that measure factors like hiring, revenue and foot traffic. Data sets may not be fully comprehensive (they only account for what is available on the web), but they can be used to gauge performance factors like staffing and sales.
